The Power Of The Mastermind
Ryan Carter

I was lucky enough that I didn't have to learn how to win at poker alone.
Jared and I both discovered the game at the same time, and decided we would
work together to learn everything we could. At the time were were living
with a friend, Mike Colson, and the 3 of us would sit around for hours
talking poker. We would often stay up all night playing heads up matches
with plastic poker chips. We started off playing for money, but once we
realized that we played just as hard either way, we stopped keeping score.
It wasn't about making money at that point, it was all about figuring out
the game of poker.

This was back in the day when people still had dial-up (if you're still
using dial-up, take some of your profits and get a real Internet connect)
and there was only one computer in the house. Each day we would play heads
up matches to see who got to play online poker first. Those who weren't
playing sat back and watched, then discussed the moves of the other players.

Instead of just jumping in the pond blindly, we were held accountable for
our plays and discussed not just what the right moves were, but why.  When
we all parted ways after that summer we still had a ton to learn, but it's
pretty easy to see why we were successful from the start.

Having a group of players around you who really push you to improve your
game is an incredible jump start to winning, unlike any other technique
available. Since I knew how powerful this was I made sure that when I moved
to Florida I was going to be living with other people who also played the
game professionally. What I didn't know was that this technique has been
around for hundreds of years, and was responsible for some of the greatest
fortunes the world has ever seen.

These groups are commonly referred to as "Masterminds", and are simply a
group of like-minded individuals getting together to accomplish a similar
goal. The group mentality stimulates discussion and all members of the
mastermind hold each other accountable for their actions. Masterminds
produce a very interesting phenomenon where each member is able to increase
his intelligence while working with the group. This is because as each
person comes upon a mental road block, the other is able to think of
something to get past it. This allows the group to think on a whole other
level, not available to an individual.

It's been proven that humans will do significantly more to please a group
than they will do to please themselves. This keeps members more disciplined,
because they don't only have to answer to themselves, but to the entire
group.

In Napoleon Hill's classic book "Think and Grow Rich" he covers in great
detail the power a mastermind group can have, and the wealth they have built
throughout US history. The best example of leveraging a mastermind group was
Henry Ford. Mr. Ford was not the most intelligent man, but he had a great
drive for producing automobiles. Instead of using his lack of personal
knowledge as an excuse, he went out and found other men who shared his same
drive and hired them to work as his mastermind. Together the group was able
to provide the nation with cars at a price the average person could afford.
If Ford had not realized the value of a mastermind group we may all still be
riding horses today.

You might not know it, but you are already a member of a very powerful
Mastermind. As a Poker Dynasty member you have access to our discussion
forums and are thus a member of the Poker Dynasty Mastermind. We all have
the same goal of making a piles and piles of money at poker, and the forums
are our vehicle for improvement. Lengthy discussions are held on everything
from specific hands to basic theory. While everyone may not agree, the
process of discussion raises everyone's ability to a level not possible
alone.

However, accountability is one area of a mastermind that our forums lack. In
the forums you could get every answer you'd ever need to be an amazing
player, but nobody will know if you actually use those answers. Since I
started studying the power of mastermind groups I've been trying to think of
a way for our members to be able to leverage this technique. Not everyone
has a group of people they know that they can move in with and form their
own small mastermind group, like I did.

Luckily, the Internet is changing the world around us in a way that makes
these limitations almost meaningless. If you are able to find a group of 4
or 5 online to be in your "mini mastermind" you can use tools such as Skype
to have discussions, and even watch your teammates play in real time.

I have set up a section of our forums for the sole purpose of finding your
own "mini mastermind'. I encourage all Dynasty members to join one of these
groups and use the power they provide to take your game to a whole new
level. Once you set up your "mini mastermind" spend as much time as you have
available discussing the game with them. Have weekly meetings where you
discuss your progress, ghost each other while playing and let your teammates
find flaws you didn't know existed, become a disciplined player and hold
your group accountable when they are not.

If you're able to find a group of people who you truly respect, then there's
no limit to how far you can push each other. Don't be afraid to talk about
your meetings in the main forum, everyone at Poker Dynasty is here to help
you with your game. Posting about group discussions will elevate everyone.
If you're not sure what you should be talking about, ask the forum. Many of
us have had a poker mastermind for years and can help you get started. Many
Poker Dynasty pros are available for group coaching, which can often be even
more powerful than one on one study.

The internet makes communication so easy that you would be a fool not to
take advantage of a mastermind group. Give it a try, and you will be
pleasantly surprised how great the results will be.
